Each year food journalists hit up nutritionists, restaurant owners, food manufacturing and marketing companies for their “next big thing” like the healthy craze that kale was or the crazy obsession we had with cupcakes as adults in recent years. Retailers, public relations firms, restaurateurs and foodies all look toward these lists to see what may take over in 2017, but it is like predicting the weather at times. It is mostly just a crap shoot but consumers do pay attention to these lists.
Whole Foods predicts “Alternative Pasta” as a 2017 food trend. What exactly does that mean? With so many going gluten free, trying to eat green or healthy the traditional white flour pasta gets a remake this year. Pasta lovers achieve this with gluten free options made of lentils, quinoa, rice or chickpeas for a more traditional look and taste.
In the U.K. the Telegraph has listed edamame noodles and pea pasta as a 2017 trend based on grocery chain Sainsbury’s heavy sales in 2016. We wonder if these will cross the pond?
Back here in the U.S. trend watchers think those wanting to skip the grains all together will be reaching for veggie noodles made by spiral cutting vegetables. Apparently spaghetti squash isn’t exactly one of the big trends on the horizon though it is a part of this trend, foodies are experimenting with other vegetables to replace pasta.
Whole Foods is predicting things like spiral cut zucchini or sweet potato noodles being big this year. There are already hundreds if not thousands of Pinterest posts about zucchini noodles on the web, so this trend already has a starting point from which to grow.
If you have an old counter top mounted apple or potato peeler you’re already set for making these trendy noodles, but we have already started to see specialized gadgets or “spiralizers” for cutting these fun spirals appearing in advertisements but you don’t need any of those. Here are 14 ways to make zucchini noodles.
Buddha Bowls are another food or at least style of eating food that has been trending on Pinterest and other food blogs over the last year and it looks like they will continue into 2017. In case you don’t know what a Buddha Bowl is, they are sometimes referred to as glory or hippie bowls. These are hearty, filling dishes made of various greens, raw or roasted veggies, beans and a healthy grain like quinoa or brown rice. Sometimes they also include toppings like nuts, seeds and dressings for added texture and flavor. It sounds sort of like a revved up salad. Here is a fun article on “How to Make a Buddha Bowl.”
Whatever the next big food trend turns out to be this year, you can bet we’ll all enjoy tasting and trying new things. The American taste has grown over the years to include more exotic fare, more than “meat and potatoes” and more health conscious. And that, we predict will continue in 2017.
